Kennerley: Anthems at the Footwashing
Kennerley: Anthems at the Footwashing
Footwashing Anthems, an a cappella setting composed in 2013 by James Kennerley for the choir of Saint Mary the Virgin, New York City and first performed on Maundy/Holy Thursday that year. The texts are taken from the selections in the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer/Hymnal. While it is preferable to perform these unaccompanied, modest organ support could be introduced during the full choir sections should it be required. It is also possible to perform these with upper voices and organ accompaniment alone.
Approximate length: 6 minutes.
I wanted to craft a contemporary setting that paid homage to the traditional plainsong melodies to which these texts have been sung, together with a choral language that was both simple and approachable. While this was intended for the Episcopal/Anglican liturgy, it is entirely appropriate for any denomination.

Text:
The Lord Jesus, after he had supped with his disciples and had washed their feet, said to them, "Do you know what I, your Lord and Master, have done to you? I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done." Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you. I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you. Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace I now leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you. By this shall the world know that you are my disciples: That you have love for one another.
