Kennerley: Evening service in D minor (upper voices)
Kennerley: Evening service in D minor (upper voices)
James Kennerley’s setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, commonly used as the evening canticles for the service of Evensong. The Magnificat, the Song of Mary, may be used at Vespers, and the Nuns Dimittis at Compline or at Candlemas/Feast of the Presentation. They are scored for upper voices and organ.
The upper voices Divide into three parts, though the work may easily be performed without divisions, or with just two divisions, as skill and resources allow. The divisions are canonic in nature, lending a sense of complexity to the texture while taking into consideration the developing nature of young voices.
The setting was composed in 2014 and was first performed at Evensong by the Girls' Choir of ElyCathedral under the direction of Sarah MacDonald on 6 May 2015.
